Sapphire Legal for Word and Outlook

Review a contract without leaving the document. The add-in runs as a task pane inside Word and Outlook, and files its findings back to the matter.

Both are small XML files. They carry no credentials — they only tell Office where the add-in lives. You sign in from inside the pane.

Before you start

  • A Microsoft 365 subscription. Add-ins do not run in one-time-purchase or perpetual Office.
  • Word 2021 or Microsoft 365 on Windows, Mac or the web. The tracked-change redlining needs a recent Word.
  • A Sapphire Legal account. You sign in from the pane the first time you open it.

Install it yourself — Windows

This affects only your machine. Use it to try the add-in before rolling it out.

  • Save the manifest into a folder, for example C:\Sapphire\addins.
  • Right-click the folder, choose Properties → Sharing → Share, and share it with yourself. Copy the network path it gives you — it looks like \\YOUR-PC\addins.
  • In Word, go to File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Trusted Add-in Catalogs. Paste the network path, click Add catalog, tick Show in Menu, then OK.
  • Restart Word, then go to Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins → Shared Folder and choose Sapphire Legal.

Install it yourself — Mac

  • In Finder press Command-Shift-G and go to ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef — create the wef folder if it is not there.
  • Copy the downloaded manifest into that folder.
  • Quit Word completely with Command-Q — closing the window is not enough — then reopen it.
  • Go to Home → Add-ins and choose Sapphire Legal.
  • For Outlook the folder is ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Outlook/Data/Documents/wef.

Replacing a manifest you have already installed

Delete the old file first. Word copies a manifest into its own store the first time it loads an add-in and then keeps using that copy, so editing the file you originally sideloaded changes nothing — the add-in carries on loading the old configuration with no error and no clue why. Remove the old file, quit Word entirely, then add the new one.

Deploy it to your firm

Centralized deployment installs the add-in for the people you choose, so nobody has to sideload anything and you can update the manifest centrally later. You need to be a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator.

  • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center at admin.microsoft.com.
  • Go to Settings → Integrated apps, and choose Upload custom apps.
  • Select App type: Office Add-in, then Upload manifest file (.xml) from device, and pick the manifest you downloaded above.
  • Assign it to yourself, to specific users and groups, or to the entire organization.
  • Review the permissions it requests and finish deployment.

It usually appears within minutes, though Microsoft allows up to 24 hours to reach every client.

Network access

The pane and its sign-in dialog are served from app.sapphirelegal.ai, and the API it calls is api.sapphirelegal.ai. Both need to be reachable from the user's machine, so allow those two hosts if your firm restricts outbound traffic.

Signing in

Open the pane and choose Sign in. A dialog opens on the Sapphire Legal portal; sign in there and it closes by itself. The pane then asks which client and matter the document belongs to, so the review is filed to the right place. If you act for several firms, you choose the firm first.

If something goes wrong

When a pane fails to load, Office usually shows a silent spinner and no error at all. Open the diagnostic page in a browser — it reports what actually happened, and is the quickest way to tell a network problem from a configuration one.

  • The pane is blank or spins forever. Check that app.sapphirelegal.ai is reachable from that machine.
  • Sign-in opens and closes, but the pane still says Not signed in. Sign in to the portal in an ordinary browser first, then try again.
  • Your edits to a manifest have no effect. Word is using its own cached copy — see above.
  • The add-in never appears after deployment. Allow up to 24 hours, then check the user is in an assigned group and holds a Microsoft 365 licence.
